While his law enforcement training shaped his initial actions, Hurst, a father of two \u2014 one with Down syndrome \u2014 said it was his parenting experience that guided his heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis job isn\u2019t just about catching criminals,\u201d Hurst shared. \u201cIt\u2019s about supporting the people in our community and being there when they need you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The child was brought to Memorial University Medical Center for evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the emergency room, the toddler became distressed and started to cry during the exam. That\u2019s when Hurst gently asked the staff if he could comfort him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe little guy was really upset \u2014 crying, sobbing,\u201d Hurst recalled. \u201cI asked if I could hold him to help calm him so they could finish his checkup, and they said yes. I picked him up, and within minutes, he was asleep on my chest.
