At first, the butcher assumed she was feeding a large family. But days turned into weeks, and her routine never changed. She never smiled, never made small talk. A faint metallic scent seemed to cling to her \u2014 the smell of rust and old blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, rumors spread through the market:
\u2014 \u201cShe\u2019s feeding stray dogs.\u201d
\u2014 \u201cNo, she runs a secret kitchen somewhere.\u201d

In a tattered armchair sat the old woman, stroking one of the beasts as it purred beneath her trembling hands. Her voice was soft, almost tender:

The butcher stumbled backward, his heart pounding. One of the lions roared, shaking the walls. The woman\u2019s head snapped toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d she hissed \u2014 her voice raw, animalistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terrified, he fled into the snow and called the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When officers arrived, the truth came out. The woman had once been a zoologist. Years ago, after the local zoo shut down, she had taken in several lions \u201cto keep them from starving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
