His creative impulses, outspoken personality, and the persistent drive to redefine himself have marked his career as much as his chart-topping singles and cultural influence. In recent years, one of the more notable shifts has been his formal request—his demand—that he no longer be referred to by his birth name, but instead by the name Ye.

In 2021, Kanye Omari West officially petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court to change his legal name to simply “Ye.” The idea had been gestating publicly for years—he had long used “Ye” as a mononym, and in a 2018 interview he explained that he believed “ye” is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible, representing “you,” meaning we all. The change, he said, was meant to reflect not just his own identity but a larger, collective reflection of humanity—our good, our bad, our confused, our evolving selves.

But the request didn’t end in 2021. In March 2024, Ye’s chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, sent letters to media organizations, streaming platforms, and other distributors, reminding them that the name change was real and legally permanent. The letters emphasized that the birth name “Kanye West” was to be retired and replaced in usage by “Ye.” The term “slave name” was referenced in those communications—Ye considers his former name to carry connotations of enforced identity, and so the shift to “Ye” was framed as an assertion of self-determination and autonomy.

Then in June 2025 some business filings from California sparked fresh speculation: several documents listed his name as “Ye Ye,” raising questions whether yet another name change was under way. However, his representatives later clarified that no additional legal name change had been officially announced and that the “Ye Ye” notation may have been a clerical oddity resulting from form requirements. Regardless, the moment underscored how deeply his identity transformation had become part of his public narrative.

Why does this matter? On one level, it’s a matter of brand and recognition. The name “Kanye West” carried massive cultural, commercial, and personal weight. To walk away from it—to ask the world to stop using it—was a significant move. The letters of March 2024 stated that Ye “didn’t take the decision … lightly,” emphasising that he was consciously relinquishing the brand value attached to his old name in favour of something he felt was more aligned with his self-concept. On another level, it’s about respect and individual choice: when someone asks to be called by a name they have chosen, to ignore that is to deny a piece of that person’s autonomy.

The online reaction has been mixed. Many fans honoured his request and applauded the symbolic weight of the shift. Others were skeptical or mocked the change—particularly the “Ye Ye” filings triggered a wave of humorous and incredulous comments online about what it all means. Some critics argue that name changes by celebrities risk becoming superficial stunts, untethered from meaningful change, while others see them as meaningful evolutions of identity.

Still, for Ye the change has deep roots. In his own words, switching from “Kanye — which means ‘the only one’ — to just Ye” was meant to transform the narrative from individualism to something shared, something human. He has presented the name “Ye” as a reflection of the human condition: the good, the bad, the confusion, the ups and downs. Using that name is, in his view, a way of positioning himself in relation to the collective “us” rather than the singular “me.”

What remains striking is the tension between change and continuity. Even though the legal paperwork is in place and the letters have been sent, many still refer to him as Kanye West—whether for habit, recognition, or deliberately. In some circles, using his former name is seen as disrespectful of his stated preference. On Reddit, for example, one user wrote:

“Even fans do this. He corrects people a lot ‘my name’s Ye, Sir’ but people keep doing it and I do not believe it’s all accidental.”

The question becomes: when someone asserts a new name, what responsibility do the media, public, and individuals have to honor it? For Ye, the answer is clear: his name is not just a label, but a statement.

Whether one agrees with every decision in his public life or not, the shift speaks to broader questions: how identity evolves, how names carry meaning, how culture responds when someone wants to revise not just their brand but their self-designation. For artists especially, name changes have long been part of reinvention—from Prince to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, from Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion—but in Ye’s case, the change appears rooted less in marketing and more in existential meaning.

He may continue to evolve—his filings suggest as much—even if public announcements lag behind. But currently, the request is unambiguous: refer to him as Ye. It is both bold and personal, a demand that the world recognize something he says is foundational to his identity.

In the end, whether you call him Ye, Kanye, or something else entirely, what this moment in his story highlights is that names matter. They carry history, intent, identity—and in changing yours, you invite everyone who knows you to change how they see you.

From the earliest days of his musical ascent, Kanye has never been content with staying static.
