Our suburban street is the kind of place most families dream about \u2014 trimmed lawns, quiet evenings, and kids riding bikes until sunset. Deborah lives directly across the street from us. Her home is immaculate \u2014 perfectly trimmed hedges, spotless windows, and blinds that seem permanently positioned for surveillance. To her, children playing outside wasn\u2019t a sign of a healthy neighborhood \u2014 it was an annoyance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, it was subtle. A curtain would shift when the boys rode past. She\u2019d stand silently behind her storm door, watching. Eventually, she confronted me directly, politely but firmly stating that \u201cchildren shouldn\u2019t be screaming outside\u201d and that my sons were being disruptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
