Halloween was Ellie\u2019s favorite day of the school year \u2014 the one time she could escape into make-believe. But that year, as she stepped into the buzzing auditorium, she wished she could disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superheroes darted between rows of chairs. Princesses twirled, vampires hissed, astronauts posed. Ellie wore plain gray pants and a white T-shirt. No glitter. No crown. No costume. She kept her head down, praying no one would notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months earlier, her dad had promised, \u201cYou\u2019ll have the prettiest princess costume in class this year.\u201d He meant it, but life had other plans. As a single father working two jobs, bills came faster than paychecks. Halloween, like so many small joys, slipped through the cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie didn\u2019t blame him. The other kids didn\u2019t see the struggle. \u201cWhat are you supposed to be?\u201d a boy sneered. \u201cA poor ghost?\u201d \u201cMaybe she\u2019s \u2018Ugly Ellie!\u2019\u201d Laughter erupted. \u201cAlright,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s make you unforgettable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wrapped her carefully, tucking and folding the paper into a makeshift mummy costume. Finally, he added a pair of goofy sunglasses from the lost-and-found box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere,\u201d he said, stepping back. \u201cMiss Ellie the Magnificent Mummy.\u201d Ellie laughed for the first time all day. As they returned to the auditorium, even the kids who mocked her fell silent. Mr. Borges gave her a nod \u2014 the kind that said, you\u2019re fine now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, Ellie told her dad everything. Embarrassed but grateful, he left a note at the school office the next morning: Thank you for helping my girl feel special today. You made her believe again.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years passed. Life remained difficult. Her father fell ill, and Ellie worked nights to help. When he passed just before graduation, Mr. Borges stood by her at the funeral, steady and unwavering. As he offered his arm and they walked down the aisle, Ellie felt the same warmth she had that day in the hallway \u2014 the warmth of being seen, valued, and loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, when Ellie had her own daughter, she gave her the middle name Borges. Every Halloween, she made sure her little girl had the best costume \u2014 stitched with extra care, a reminder of what it feels like to be invisible and then made magnificent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
