Lauralee Bell\u2019s initial reaction when she learned that her The Young and the Restless<\/em> character Christine \u201cCricket\u201d Blair would be getting engaged to Michael Damian\u2019s Danny Romalotti? \u201cFinally,\u201d she tells PEOPLE exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell, 56, and Damian, 63, spoke with PEOPLE ahead of the big engagement episode airing July 10 on The Young and the Restless<\/em>. \u201cWe were really, really thrilled,\u201d Bell shares, \u201cbecause this moment has been 35 years in the making.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, 35 years might even be an understatement\u2014this marks the anniversary of when Cricket and Danny first tied the knot during a destination wedding in Hawaii. Their love story began years earlier, starting with teenage Cricket\u2019s crush on Danny that eventually blossomed into a relationship. Their marriage ended after Danny had an affair with a fan, Phyllis Summers (played by Michelle Stafford), who later gave birth to their son Daniel (who Danny later discovered was not biologically his).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decades later, Cricket and Danny are rekindling their romance. Bell believes the timing is perfect since many of their longtime fans are now \u201cat a different stage in life\u201d and reminiscing about times when they \u201cfelt safe and happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were part of those moments for them, and now we\u2019re coming back when maybe their kids have moved out or gone to college,\u201d Bell explains. \u201cWe bring back memories of those fun days when everyone felt young and wished they could relive those times. We\u2019re truly grateful that our fans have stuck with us and will be thrilled about this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damian adds about their fans, \u201cI think the nostalgia really resonates with them. They\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my God, finally.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell jokes, \u201cWe couldn\u2019t wait any longer because if one of us had to propose, it might not look any better 10 years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Cricket and Danny reached supercouple status in the late \u201980s and early \u201990s, Bell recalls, \u201cWe used to do public appearances on weekends, and that\u2019s when we really saw how passionate the fans were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was such a fun time,\u201d Damian remembers, whose own musical career was woven into Danny\u2019s storyline. Reflecting on their characters\u2019 appeal, both actors believe part of it is how much fun they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe scenes were often playful,\u201d Bell shares. \u201cWe chased each other around, put ice on each other\u2019s backs, tickled each other, played strip poker \u2014 moments that drew viewers in because they felt like intimate glimpses into our lives.\u201d The fact their love story spanned so many years helped fans become deeply connected, they agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell adds, \u201cIt was sweet how, at first, you wouldn\u2019t think the little groupie girl would win the rock star\u2019s heart. That\u2019s part of the excitement \u2014 could it really happen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damian credits Bell\u2019s father, William J. Bell \u2014 who co-created the show with Lee Phillip Bell \u2014 for beautifully crafting their romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the upcoming on-screen wedding, neither Bell nor Damian knows what to expect. \u201cIt\u2019s fun imagining it might be just six people or maybe half the cast. I really have no clue,\u201d Bell says. She plans to share behind-the-scenes moments of their wedding journey on Instagram. Damian jokes maybe Phyllis will let them get married at her house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don\u2019t count on Phyllis being supportive. Bell reveals that during Cricket\u2019s time off-screen \u2014 while Danny was on his world tour \u2014 Cricket \u201cbecame a badass.\u201d She\u2019s no longer affected by Phyllis\u2019 scheming and even jokes she might \u201cjust backhand her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite their characters\u2019 tense relationship, Bell and Damian enjoy working with Stafford, 59. \u201cWe were rehearsing last week and were laughing so hard we had to finally stop and run lines,\u201d Damian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell notes Stafford was nervous when she joined the show in 1994 because she was coming between the \u201cinseparable\u201d Danny and Cricket. \u201cAnd she nailed it from day one,\u201d Bell admires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor fans waiting for the wedding, I hope Phyllis will be plotting something, but nothing will stop the actual \u2018I do,\u2019\u201d Bell says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
