The unveiling follows eight years of archaeological excavation and preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say Pe\u00f1ico, established around <strong>1800 BC<\/strong>, played a key role in connecting coastal societies in the <strong>Supe Valley<\/strong> with Andean highland and Amazonian communities. Built at an elevation of <strong>600 meters<\/strong>, the city\u2019s location was ideal for facilitating regional exchange, the ministry noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis urban center emerged from the cultural legacy of <strong>Caral<\/strong>,\u201d said <strong>Ruth Shady<\/strong>, chief researcher and head of the <strong>Caral Archaeological Zone (ZAC)<\/strong>. \u201cIts location enabled connections between the coastal and mountain populations of Supe and Huaura, as well as Andean and Amazonian regions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archaeologists have identified <strong>18 structures<\/strong> at Pe\u00f1ico, including ceremonial and residential buildings. Among the most prominent is a <strong>monumental public building<\/strong> labeled B1-B3, where researchers uncovered <strong>clay figurines, ritual artifacts<\/strong>, and <strong>\u201cpututus\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 conch-shell instruments once used in sacred ceremonies and public gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars believe Pe\u00f1ico rose to prominence after the decline of <strong>Caral<\/strong>, possibly gaining status through its involvement in trading <strong>hematite<\/strong>, a red mineral valued for its spiritual significance in Andean culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now open to tourists, the site features a modern <strong>interpretation center<\/strong>, visitor facilities, and guided paths through the preserved ruins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch precedes the inaugural <strong>Pe\u00f1ico Raymi<\/strong> festival, scheduled for Saturday.
