Remembering the Karatu School Bus Tragedy: Eight Years Later
It has been eight years since one of Tanzania’s most heartbreaking events — the Karatu school bus tragedy. On May 6, 2017, 32 children, along with two teachers and their driver from Lucky Vincent Primary School in Arusha, lost their lives in a tragic accident that deeply impacted the nation.
The Day That Altered Everything
The children were headed to take a mock national exam, a significant step in their academic journey. However, while traveling on the winding mountain roads of Karatu district, disaster struck. On a rain-slicked section, the driver lost control, causing the bus to fall into a deep ravine.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the extent of the tragedy was overwhelming. Families, educators, and entire communities were left devastated.
