She sent me the photo, thinking it was cute. “Majestic, right?” she messaged. But I couldn’t stop looking at the lion’s paw. It wasn’t scratching or swiping — it was pressed flat against the glass, matching my niece’s small hand. And those eyes… they weren’t fierce. They were fixed on her, as if seeing something invisible to everyone else.
When I asked which zoo they had visited, my sister named it, then hesitated. “You won’t believe this,” she said. Apparently, the lion never engaged with visitors. For months, he barely moved when crowds gathered. But as soon as my niece approached, he stood up, crossed the enclosure, and placed his paw on the glass — almost like a welcome.
The keeper, who had been there nearly twenty years, said he’d never witnessed the lion act like that. Usually, the big cat stayed hidden in the corner, indifferent to everyone. But with my niece, it was a different story.
