
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez (D‑NY) is under increased examination following a stern caution issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During an appearance on Fox News’ The Bottom Line, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin indicated that Ocasio‑Cortez could face legal repercussions if she takes part in disruptive protests near immigration enforcement sites.
“If she trespasses or obstructs law enforcement, legal measures are definitely a possibility,” McLaughlin stated. She maintained that although some Democratic officials describe their actions as congressional oversight, DHS considers them politically driven attempts to interfere with federal operations.
This dispute comes after the recent arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka outside an ICE detention facility. According to U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, Baraka was repeatedly instructed to leave the restricted area and was ultimately charged with trespassing. DHS reports that Baraka joined demonstrators who tried to breach the facility’s boundary, heightening tensions with ICE staff. Other Democratic figures — including Representatives LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Rob Menendez Jr. — were also present at the demonstration.
