Nine-year-old Milly had always been captivated by nature. She spent countless hours exploring the woods near her home, collecting insects and observing small creatures. One sunny afternoon, armed with a basket and a few empty jars, she set out on another adventure. But that day, she stumbled upon something she’d never seen before.
Among the leaves, half-hidden in the shadows, was a dark, scaly creature. At first, Milly thought it was just a large lizard. But as she looked closer, something about it seemed… off. Its skin was slick and almost glossy black, and it was much larger than any lizard she had ever found. Still, curiosity got the best of her. Carefully, she coaxed the strange creature into a jar and brought it home.
Back in her room, Milly eagerly searched online, trying to identify it. But no matter what she typed—nothing matched. Hours passed, and she still had no answers. Not wanting to alarm her parents, she decided to keep her find a secret until she could learn more.
A few days later, the creature began acting differently. It moved sluggishly and barely ate. Worried it might be sick, Milly finally told her father, who immediately decided they should take it to the local vet.
But the moment the veterinarian laid eyes on it, everything changed. His expression shifted from curiosity to shock. He stepped back suddenly and raised his voice: “Don’t go near it!” He quickly made a phone call and left the room, closing the door behind him.
Milly and her father exchanged anxious looks. What could possibly be wrong? Was it dangerous? Had she done something bad by bringing it home?
When the vet returned, his tone was grave. He explained that the creature wasn’t a normal lizard—and it didn’t belong anywhere near their part of the world. It was something rare, possibly exotic, and potentially dangerous. He admitted it was beyond his expertise and said he’d called in wildlife specialists who were already on their way.
Before they arrived, the vet asked detailed questions: exactly where they had found it, how they had handled it, and whether anyone else had touched it.
