housing. But what if we told you someone took this idea to a whole new level? This is the story of how a woman turned an airplane into a luxurious and practical home.
A Unique Housing Solution
In 1993, Jo Ann Ussery faced a devastating loss when her house was destroyed by a storm. With limited resources and two children to support, she needed an innovative solution. That’s when her brother-in-law, who worked as an air traffic controller, suggested she consider living in an airplane. This remarkable story reveals how a woman turned a plane into something truly extraordinary.
Ussery bought a retired Boeing 727 for just $2,000, plus shipping fees. The plane, affectionately dubbed “Little Trump” after Donald Trump’s private jet, became her canvas. She spent less than $30,000 renovating the interior, resulting in one of the most impressive plane-to-home conversions ever.
Extensive Renovation
The Boeing 727, measuring 138 feet long and offering nearly 1,500 square feet of space, was perfect for repurposing. Ussery parked the plane nose-first over a lake on her property, giving the former cockpit a stunning view. This was just one example of her creative approach to turning a plane into a beautiful and functional home.
Inside, she added three bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry room, and even a master bathroom. The cockpit was transformed into a luxurious bathroom featuring a soaking tub with a view of the lake. While the outside still looked like an airplane, the interior became a cozy, stylish living space.
A Home Like No Other
Ussery’s vision proved that a retired aircraft could be reimagined as an elegant home. She lived in the plane for several years and later planned to convert it into a museum. Sadly, the plane was severely damaged during transportation and could not be saved. Still, her story remains a powerful example of how a woman transformed an airplane into something truly exceptional.
