Just hours after receiving his high school diploma, 18-year-old Mykale Baker was back on the job at Burger King — still wearing his graduation stole and medals. Instead of celebrating with his classmates, the Georgia teen chose to help out during a busy evening shift, not knowing this decision would change the course of his future.
From Graduation Stage to the Burger Counter
On May 21, Baker brought his mom and grandmother to the fast food restaurant where he’d worked for over a year, wanting to celebrate his graduation from Mill Creek High School. But when the team became overwhelmed during the dinner rush, he didn’t hesitate to jump in and assist — even in his cap and gown.
A Viral Act of Dedication
Customer Maria Mendoza, who had just come from her own daughter’s graduation ceremony, noticed Baker working in his graduation attire. Touched by his humility and strong sense of responsibility, she filmed a short clip of him helping customers with a smile on his face.
“There was something so real and inspiring about the way he carried himself,” Mendoza told 11 Alive News. “Even after graduating, he showed up without complaint, with so much joy.”
She shared the video on TikTok, urging viewers to “do your thing.” The video quickly went viral, racking up over 4.5 million views and earning widespread admiration.
From TikTok to Real-Life Support
Not content with just sharing the moment, Mendoza created a GoFundMe page to support Baker’s education. Her initial goal was modest — just a few thousand dollars — but the internet responded with overwhelming generosity. In just a few days, contributions soared well past $100,000, more than doubling the original target of $60,000.
On the fundraiser page, Mendoza wrote:
“While others were out celebrating, one young man showed what real perseverance and heart look like. He wasn’t looking for praise — he didn’t even know he was being filmed. But his actions spoke volumes.”
The money raised will help Baker cover tuition, school supplies, books, and other educational expenses.
A Life-Changing Moment
On May 26, Mendoza returned to the Burger King location to present the first $6,000 raised. Baker was visibly emotional and deeply moved by the outpouring of support.
“Mykale doesn’t even realize how special he is,” said his sister, Mycah Baker, in an interview with The New York Post. “He always does the right thing, even when no one’s watching. That’s just his nature.”
Initially, Baker had considered delaying college due to financial limitations. Thanks to the unexpected wave of donations, he now feels confident about enrolling in a technical program to pursue a career in mechanics.
“I’m honestly speechless,” Baker said in a video message. “I never thought something like this could happen. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

Burger King’s own charitable foundation also took notice and awarded Baker a $10,000 scholarship to support his education journey further.
