Researchers Investigate Substances Detected in Select Wet Pet Food Products

A new scientific study is drawing attention to substances known as PFAS—short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—and their potential presence in certain pet food products. While these chemicals are widely used in manufacturing for their resistance to heat, grease, and water, researchers continue to explore how long-term exposure may affect both humans and animals.

Often called “forever chemicals,” PFAS break down very slowly in the environment. Over time, they’ve been detected in soil, water sources, and even remote ecosystems around the globe. Because of their persistence, scientists are closely studying how these substances move through the food chain.

What the Study Found

In the recent research, scientists analyzed 100 popular pet food products sold in Japan. The products included brands manufactured across several regions, including the United States, Europe, Australia, and China. The goal was to determine whether trace levels of PFAS could be detected in commercial pet foods and whether certain product types showed higher concentrations.

The results revealed that measurable amounts of PFAS were found in a number of samples. However, levels varied depending on ingredients and product form.

  • Fish-based formulas and some grain-based products showed higher concentrations in certain cases.
