Aviation incident raises safety concerns
The accident occurred during landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York City on Sunday, March 22. Reports indicate the aircraft collided with an emergency vehicle on the runway, resulting in the deaths of both pilots onboard.
The pilots, identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther, are being remembered for their efforts in minimizing the impact of the crash.
Miscommunication during emergency response
According to initial findings, emergency crews had been responding to a separate aircraft issue when a breakdown in communication with air traffic control led to the vehicle being positioned incorrectly on the runway.
Video footage and released audio recordings reportedly capture the moments leading up to the collision, including an acknowledgment of error from air traffic personnel.
Passenger recounts terrifying moments
One passenger, Rebecca Liquori, shared her firsthand account of the incident. She described hearing a grinding noise moments before a powerful impact.
“It sounded like metal scraping, and then suddenly there was a huge bang,” she explained. “No one knew what was happening. People were afraid the situation could escalate quickly.”
Liquori, who works as a nurse, said passengers were unsure whether there was a risk of fire or further danger, prompting many to evacuate as quickly as possible.
