Kate Middleton Shares a Toast — and a Wink — with President Macron at Windsor Castle State Banquet

One of the most talked-about moments from the grand state banquet at Windsor Castle came when French President Emmanuel Macron gave Princess Kate a wink during the evening’s festivities.

The formal dinner, held on July 8, marked the first official French state visit to the U.K. in 17 years. Macron was seated between Princess Kate and King Charles at the glittering event, which brought together high-profile guests from both nations.

Before the meal began, Macron displayed a gentlemanly gesture by helping the Princess of Wales with her chair and waiting for her to sit before taking his own seat beside her. During the evening, the two were seen clinking glasses during a toast — followed by Macron giving Kate a subtle wink, a moment that quickly spread online and sparked a wave of attention on social media.

Their friendly rapport had already been on display earlier that day, when the Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed President Macron and his wife, Brigitte, at RAF Northolt. As a greeting, Macron kissed Kate’s hand — a gesture that, though rare, is not against royal customs.

According to the royal family’s official website, there are no strict rules about how to interact with members of the monarchy. While bowing or curtsying is traditional, people may also choose to simply shake hands.

Inside the banquet hall, the seating plan placed married couples across from each other. King Charles, President Macron, and Princess Kate sat together on one side of the table, while Prince William sat opposite next to Madame Macron, who was seated beside Queen Camilla.

The guest list featured a mix of royals, politicians, and celebrities — including Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, actress Kristin Scott Thomas, and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

During his toast, King Charles highlighted the symbolism of the occasion and even noted the evening’s wine selection: “Tonight, we are drinking English sparkling wine made by a French champagne producer — something that past generations might have found hard to believe.”

President Macron’s toast echoed a message of solidarity, emphasizing the continued importance of cooperation between France and the United Kingdom.

“On both sides of the Channel, we are reminded daily that we must remain vigilant,” he said.
