While twin births have become more frequent in recent years, they remain relatively uncommon. In the U.S., only about 33 out of every 1,000 births are twins—and just a small percentage of those are identical. But for 23-year-old Savannah Combs of Middleburg, Florida, her pregnancy turned out to be something truly extraordinary.
Savannah was thrilled to discover she was expecting identical twin girls. However, partway through her pregnancy, she received news that made her journey even more remarkable: both of her daughters had been diagnosed with Down syndrome—a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.
“It’s incredibly rare, what they have,” Savannah shared in an interview with News4JAX. “But to me, they’re my little gems.”
