Lerynne West, a resident of Iowa, gained national attention after claiming a share of a record-breaking $687 million Powerball jackpot. Rather than concentrating on luxury or self-indulgence, West chose to use her fortune to create a significant difference—starting with a $500,000 contribution to aid U.S. veterans.

In a nationwide interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, West discussed how the unexpected fortune transformed her life and what motivated her future plans. She talked about establishing the Callum Foundation, a nonprofit organization named in memory of her late grandson. The foundation’s purpose includes assisting individuals facing poverty, promoting animal protection, and offering support to military veterans and their loved ones.

“My initial reaction was to give back,” West said, reflecting on the principles that influenced her choice. Coming from a family with a proud tradition of military involvement—including a father who fought in the Vietnam War and three brothers who are former service members—West felt a strong obligation to assist those who have served the nation.
