Bryant Family Endures Another Heartbreaking Loss

The basketball world is mourning the loss of Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, a former NBA player and respected coach, who has passed away at the age of 69. Remembered for his vibrant personality and lasting impact on the game, Bryant leaves behind a legacy honored by former teammates, fans, and the wider sports community.

La Salle University—where Bryant first rose to national prominence as a college standout—confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement. “Joe was a beloved member of the Explorer family and will be dearly missed,” said La Salle head coach Fran Dunphy, who also noted that Bryant had recently faced a serious health issue.

Bryant’s basketball journey spanned both decades and continents. After an impressive collegiate career at La Salle, where he averaged more than 20 points per game, he was selected in the 1975 NBA Draft. He went on to play for several teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers. Known for his dynamic style and signature flair, he earned the nickname “Jellybean” and quickly became a fan favorite—especially in his hometown of Philadelphia.

The 76ers also released a tribute after the news broke, calling him a “local basketball icon” whose influence extended far beyond the court. “Joe Bryant’s passion for the game and his connection to the community made a lasting impression,” the team said.
