A Water Gun Joke Turned Deadly: He Ended Up Shot with a Real Bullet

What began as a playful water fight in a Bronx park on a hot summer day ended in real violence — and now, a family is mourning the loss of a second son to gun violence.

Darrell Harris, 17, was shot in the head and arm around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday near Sheridan Boulevard and East 173rd Street, according to an NYPD spokesperson. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

“He told me he was going to the park because his friends were having a water gun fight,” Harris’ mother, Kellie Lewis, told ABC 7.

Sources told ABC 7 and News 12 that a group of teens had gathered in Starlight Park to cool off during the heat wave, spraying each other with water guns — until the mood shifted.

Witnesses say Darrell asked someone to stop repeatedly squirting him in the head. In response, the individual pulled out a real gun, shot him, and fled the scene. Police have not yet identified the suspect.
